چکیده

Biopyrrin is an oxidative metabolite of bilirubin. Biopyrrin is a tripyrrol moiety of bilirubin, including two regioisomers (biotripyrrin-a, 1,14,15,17tetrahydro-2,7,13-trimethyl-1,14-deoxy-3-vinyl-16Htripyrrin-8,12-dipropionic acid and biotripyrrin-b, 1,14,15,17-tetrahydro-3,7,13-trimethyl-1,14-deoxy2-vinyl-16H-tripyrrin-8,12-dipropionic acid: Fig. 1). For many years, bilirubin was regarded as a potentially toxic waste product formed during heme catabolism. However, recent evidence suggests that bilirubin is a physiological antioxidant that may scavenge oxygen and peroxyl radicals as efficiently asα-tocopherol. Circulating bilirubin functions as a suicide antioxidant; it is catabolized to biopyrrin and is excreted in urine. We now have an assay method for biopyrrin in urine that uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an anti-bilirubin monoclonal antibody, 24G7. The antibody has an epitope in the dipyrrole Journal of Analytical Bio-Science Vol. 30, No 4 (2007)

Etiologies of Prolonged Unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia in Neonates Admitted to Neonatal Wards

Background: Jaundice is a common condition among neonates. Prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia occurs when jaundice persists beyond two weeks in term neonates and three weeks in preterm neonates. This study aimed to determine the etiologies of prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in infants admitted to the neonatal ward of Besat Hospital in Hamadan, Iran. Methods: This study was cond...

Oral calcium phosphate: a new therapy for Crigler-Najjar disease?

BACKGROUND & AIMS Calcium phosphate binds unconjugated bilirubin in vitro, and dietary calcium phosphate supplementation reduces the serum bilirubin level in rats with hereditary unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (Gunn rats). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral calcium phosphate supplementation on plasma bilirubin levels in patients with Crigler-Najjar disease. METHODS A pl...

Metabolism and disposition of C14-bilirubin in congenital non-hemolytic jaundice.

In mammals, unconjugated bilirubin is rapidly cleared from the circulation and almost quantitatively excreted as a conjugate in the bile (2-4). The efficiency and rapidity of this process indicate that conjugation and subsequent biliary excretion represent the principal pathway of bilirubin disposition. If alternate pathways of bilirubin metabolism exist under physiologic conditions, their leve...

Neonatal jaundice.

This article discusses the production, transport, and excretion of bilirubin in the newborn period. The causes, significance, and treatment of unconjugated and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia are different; and because this is so, it is important to review the main causes and management of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn period could be either due to ...

Effective treatment of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia with oral bile salts in Gunn rats.

BACKGROUND & AIMS We tested the hypothesis that oral administration of bile salts, which are known to increase the biliary excretion of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB), decreases unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in the Gunn rat model. METHODS Adult Gunn rats were fed a standard diet or the same diet supplemented with 0.5 weight % ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) or cholic acid (CA) for 1 or 6 weeks. U...
